fic?

I don't care if you've never seen an episode of Supernatural, syntax, a story in 101 lines is the best thing of all time ever.

That is all.

Scurvy dogs and mangy cats!

Yar, mateys. In joyous recognition of Talk Like a Pirate Day I be wearin' me pirate bandana made by The Sade and wishin' I had a more appropriate shirt to go with the thing. Also I be havin' me one day off this week and plan to sally on to the comics store later on and perhaps to buy things.

Methinks I'll look for some Hellblazers, as I've been wantin' to read those again lately. And plunderin' the stores to own them meself is what it's all about, eh?

Um, I'm a Canadian pirate. Shut up.

Ahoy! I've just seen that LJ changed its display today - the button fer posting an entry say "Update Captain's Log" instead! ARRrrr.

school update, if anyone cares.

Oy. After managing to register for Language&Culture, waffling back and forth over whether I'm being a) chicken or b) sensible, and talking with my roommates about it, I have decided to drop my German class for which I am really not ready. It's been ten minutes, and I still feel content and unburdened, so I think it was the right decision. I do, however, plan to review German grammar on my own and put in some Language Lab time if they'll let me over the next few months, and will probably take the class in the spring.

This is better for everyone's sanity, methinks.

Up next: GRE.

oh em gee the things you do to mee

Today was officially a Good Day.

Which I am cutting because it got rly long yet still full of joy so clickyclicky here )

*deep breath*

ETA: Just heard back from the LangCult prof. That class is apparently a joint grad/undergrad class (isn't that something the grad advisor should maybe know? oh well), so once he puts through the overtally permission (b/c the class is technically full, but which he's willing to do), I'll register for the undergrad section of the course, which is da same ting content-wise. W00t, I say, w00t!

Kittens don't like oranges. Except as big squishy balls to play with. I was planning to eat that, Lorelei. Please to be not bruising it, kthnx.

School! Has begun. Has begun last week, actually, but since I had to go for late registration and even today I'm still wrestling with the registration system to get it to accept my permission to take grad classes, it still feels like the very beginning. I'm getting into the swing of my language classes, as I had the second session of each tonight. I'm taking Hebrew and German, so by the end of the year I should be able to understand Yiddish. Heh. (Isn't that how that works?) I have a feeling they'll start mushing in my brain.

In Hebrew I've started taking notes in mirror writing to get used to it, and also because it amuses me greatly. Today my notebook says SRETTEL GNIDNE and SRETTEL GNITRATS ON and BREV A SI DOG. German is The Tough, because it's an intermediate class (why oh why am I so brave sometimes?), and I've never taken German in school, so I've yet to have the dative cases and the verb endings not to mention simple vocabulary drilled into my brain. My comprehension is pretty good for the level the prof is speaking at, but forming coherent sentences is a formidable challenge. It triggers lots of anxiety and feelings of stupidity and is making me really appreciate the psychological difficulties of someone coming to live in a country whose language one barely speaks. Perception of intelligence - of self and of others - is so tied into ability to communicate. I think I shall never feel smart in this class, which is tough. But I am trying to recognize the anxiety for what it is, and stubbornly barrel through it. We'll see if it works. I may post angsty laments about this phenomenon in the coming semester.

Tomorrow I'll find out whether I'll be taking grad level Language and Culture (pleasepleasepleaseyes) or undergrad Intro To Prehistoric Archaeology (yeahokayiguess). Meh. Stupid red tape. I'd be much obliged to any sacrifices or prayers y'all might wish to make to the registrar gods on my behalf.

Now, new House episode! I express my glee with my Elric-chan icon.

SciFi Friday, in quotes.

I don't do episode reviews. I do write down funny quotes as they happen, though. Pardon my lack of SG-1 quotes; I didn't start taking notes until nearly the end of that ep.

SG-1: Uninvited, with spoilers )

Aaaand...SGA: Progeny, with spoilers )

Finally, (and I don't think this counts as spoilery, which is the point of what I'm about to say) I have left out quoting the part where Rodney says "there's nothing worse than people who won't admit their mistakes" and Zelenka boggles at him and Sheppard shushes Zelenka while Rodney babbles on obliviously, because I found it obvious and silly. Although the Sheppard shushing Zelenka part was quite adorable.

*ruffles Zelenka's hair*

Have I told y'all that I adore Radek largely because he reminds me of my dad? Not that my dad is Czech, or anything. Plus he has a beard. My dad, that is. Not Radek. *points to icon*

I missed you, SciFi Friday. I blow kisses in your general direction.

Today I have:

1. Fallen asleep (that was early this morning) in relative comfort, thanks to the rain last night which turned God's thermostat from 100F down to about 80F.
2. Woken up with the blissful desire to put a SHEET over me because I WASN'T QUITE WARM ENOUGH.
3. Become a W'burg stereotype, sitting in the Atlas Cafe (2 blocks from my new house) with my laptop, posting to LJ. At the tables around me I count four other Macs, four Dells, a Vaio, and two something elses. Everyone is under 35 and pretty. Oh, another Mac just sat down. On the big wall is a Soviet-era world map. I'm not quite sure what that says.
4. Loved it.

Mon, Jul. 24th, 2006, 06:42 am

1. Went a little crazy the last few days. Most coherent thoughts were "ow" and "chocolate, good". Kept having flashbacks of that dream I had where I kicked through a glass window and how satisfying that was. Not a conducive mindset to good... much of anything.

2. Feeling much saner this morning. Lorelei seems to have absorbed some of my crazy overnight and is looking at me funny, but that's life.

3. Must to work now. Chocolate still good. Peace.

i dream of moving

The dream I had before waking up was very tangible; it seemed to be a cross between Battlestar Galactica and The Flying Dutchman (version-PotC2), with elements of slavery and daringly broken glass. See, Read more... )

Aren't you glad I lj-cut my dreams?

In today news, I have ten days before I move, so I'll be lugging boxes back on the subway tonight. Woo.

Wed, Jul. 19th, 2006, 08:10 pm

I rewatched some Blake's 7 today, namely the last 3 episodes. Read more... )

Also, now am watching So You Think You Can Dance. It's possible I'm in love with Mia Michaels. But then I knew that, and hated to admit it, back when I was a 17-year old conservatory student at Tisch.

Yeah. Done now.

So, there's maybe one of you who cares about this, but I'll say it anyway: [info]gwyn_r has posted about Media Cannibals' newly remastered (old school) Professionals vid A Fire Is Burning. Is cool. The site has much other Pro's stuff too.

I just thought you might want to know. :)

Tue, Jul. 18th, 2006, 01:49 pm

When a Kevin Smith movie is shown on network tv, Jay's entire dialogue is dubbed over. Badly. Also? That pic in his wikiprofile makes him look strangely like Christian Bale. *squints*

Now added to my list of People I've Sold Books To (actually, I suppose I should start keeping a list): Mom from Lost Boys. :) She was really sweet and was wearing this adorable flowy hippie dress thing. Oh, and also on that list from a while ago is Mister Adams, who (I recently discovered) has the same birthday as me.

[/random]

In other news, I've signed a lease on a new apartment; Lorelei and I are lounging about in the air conditioning watching DS9; my new favorite Sumerologist is making me want to a) go to UPenn and b) excavate Eridu.

I promise I'll stop putting quite so many wikipedia links in my posts.

Maybe.

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans; to everyone else, I hope you don't mind if I take this day to reflect upon the universality of the ideas behind the Independence of the United States of America )

so here i am

I arrived at Origins this morning, half-asleep b/c of not getting to bed last night, popping no-doz to stay alert and lugging my suitcase to the art show. And guess what I've ended up doing, while on my vacation from cashiering at B&N?

Cashiering. At the art show. Of course, this is the much lower-tech version of it, where we have a blue zippered pouch for all our cash and a web server for credit cards, and old DELL laptops that keep crashing. But still. Funny how that works out.

Looking at the above, that sounds a little bitter. I'm actually terribly pleased with how this worked out, because the other non-senior volunteers here don't seem to know how the heck to make this computer thing work, so I'm slipping easily into a role I can execute with ease. *bounces*

Plus there's enough of us volunteering that we can leave for an hour and wander about the dealer's room if we feel like it.

More C-Span watching

So, right now on C-Span, in the House, they're talking about budget allocation. Which is fascinating. No, really, because theyr'e talking about whether they should allow NASA to use their money for a manned mission to Mars. Good ol' Barney Frank is yelling at his fellow reps about how it's a stupid priority to spend money on sending people to Mars when we have domestic problems, blah, blah, blah.

Apparently it's a Republican thing to support the space program these days.

*checks self for Republican cooties*

P.S. I love watching debates in Congress because they never use names, they call everybody "The gentleman/gentlelady from (state)". It's so proper and cute.

ETA: Ooh, now they're discussing medical marijuana. Also passionate and full of yelling. :)
